Trailer for Zardoz (1974)

I had to look this up after viewing Rob Kozlowski's Movie Poster of the Week.

I actually SAW "Zardoz" back in 1974 or whenever. It's not as bad you might think from the trailer - no groovy Peter Max graphics, although I think there was a dream/drug sequence. I remember it as being about on the same level as "Excalibur," Boorman's other "mystically masculine" magnum opus: visually arresting, dramatically very silly - so I'm surprised it hasn't achieved "Excalibur"'s camp classic status. Hard to believe the same guy who made "Deliverance" and "Point Blank" could also make "Excalibur" and "Zardoz," (not to mention "Exorcist II"!) but there you have it. Clearly hard-boiled guy stuff, with all the hysteria under tight wraps, was his forte. When he got "spiritual," though, things got very woozy very fast.
